Food in Literature: A Book Review on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 1.0 Introduction Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964) is a childrenââ¬â¢s novel by the famous author Roald Dahl. As the name of the novel suggests, chocolate is the food theme running through the plot of the novel. The purpose of this paper is to give a review of the book, with emphasis on the relevance of chocolate to the social environment and the story development. This paper will also include a technical and historical review of chocolate, and also address some of the more specific issues relating to chocolate in light of Dahlââ¬â¢s novel. 2.0 Plot Summary Mr. Willy Wonka is the eccentric owner of the greatest chocolate factory in the world. He dreamt of becoming an inventor and to create chocolates that would excite even Mr. Cadbury himself. The Extent of American Unity and Identity Since early colonization the English colonies had always felt closer to England than to each other. In fact, it took a British newspaper less time to reach Savannah than a letter from Massachusetts. Answer: Introduction CSR, or Corporate Social Responsibility, is the manner in which the companies achieve a unique balance of the economic, social and environmental imperatives, and at the same time, it addresses the expectations of its stakeholders (Schwartz, 2011). There are two views which are related to CSR, one is a broad view and the other is the narrow view (Shaw et al., 2017). In the following parts, an argument has been constructed to favor the broad view of the CSR. And to support this view, the theory given by Kant has been used. In this essay, both the sides of view, i.e., the narrow view and the broad view have been thoroughly analyzed and arguments have been provided to support or contradict them. In the end, it has been established that the broad view of CSR is more compelling in comparison to the narrow view. CSR CSR is a form of self regulatory mechanism, which is undertaken by the organizations to ensure the compliance of the law in letter, as well as, spirit and to follow the ethical standards followed internationally (Kotler Lee, 2011). CSR integrates the social concerns of a business with their operations. Under CSR, a triple bottom approach is adopted in which equilibrium is attained between the people, profit and planet. It acts as a moral agent for the organizations to fulfill the obligations they have towards the society and the environment. It also puts a check over the organizations to not harm either the society or the environment, for profit maximization (Amaeshi, Nnodim Onyeka, 2013). Arguments for the Broad View THE BROAD VIEW The broad view of CSR states the socio economic view, as per which all of the organizations carrying business are a part of a large society and their responsibilities are not restricted to a mere profit maximization. Under this view, the interest of the company, relating to the financial aspect, does not overshadow its responsibilities towards the society. And with the passage of time, the broad view is gaining momentum, as more and more business houses are adopting CSR in addition to their economical interests (Mallin, 2016). Argument 1 Argument 2 Argument 3 Social purpose The organizations are the creations of human being and they have been invented to serve the needs of the humans. Along with earning profits, the organizations have the obligation in addition to this pursuit. The profit making duty is trumped by the other responsibilities of the company. Organizations owe a duty towards their stakeholders, which include the environment, customers, employees and suppliers. So, they have the power to influence a number of elements from the society (Kotler Maon, 2016). Corporations have power The organizations are widespread and touch a number of aspects while conducting their business. So, their actions have the power to affect the society and the environment, in both positive and negative manner. Since the companies have so much power, it is accompanies by that much responsibilities too. Being large and influential in nature, the businesses owe some obligations towards the society (Shaw Barry, 2015). The social contract The organizations have an obligation to consider the impact it leaves over the society. Being the creation of humans, it has to take care of its creators and see to it that its actions do not harm its creators. And so, they have to consider the interests of the society which can be impacted due to their actions. There is a universal contract amid the business and the society. As per this contract, the society makes all the rules and sets out the responsibilities for the organizations to operate under. So, while carrying on the business, they have to abide by the norms of the society (Shaw Barry, 2015). Arguments against Arguments against Arguments against The Stakeholder model argument contends that the corporations have duty towards all of its stakeholders, who can be affected by its actions and can include any party which is affected by the company doing or not doing something. This goes being their duty towards the clients, environment, environment, employees and the like. So, the wide ambit of stakeholders could have grave ramifications for the stakeholders (Shaw Barry, 2015). Again the stakeholder model argument applies. The ambit of wide stakeholders makes the responsibilities wider. So, the companies may unknowingly affect such stakeholders which are not recognized or directly influenced as a result of their actions (Shaw Barry, 2015). The Syncretic model recognizes the interdependence of society and business. But at the same time, it highlights the failure of recognizing this interdependence in business houses favour as the society leads to the reduction in the productivity of the initiatives taken under CSR (Shaw Barry, 2015). The actions of the organizations are not focused on merely the attainment of profit, but upon the fulfilling its obligations laid down for the society and the environment. Arguments for the Narrow View THE NARROW VIEW The narrow view supports the notion that the businesses work for the sole aim of earning profits and profit maximization. Moreover, the only responsibility which the organizations owe towards the society relates to providing the necessary goods and services to them, so as to provide the maximum amount of profits to its shareholders (Woermann, 2012). Argument 1 Argument 2 Argument 3 Argument 4 The invisible hand This is based on the contention of Adam Smith regarding the notion that people and organizations, in a free market, should be left to promote their self interest on economic basis. While doing so, they are guided by the invisible hand to promote the greater good for general public. This should be done by the organizations too, since they are not the moral agents. By leaving them alone, the corporations would attain the greater good in their pursuit of self interest (Shaw Barry, 2015). Let Governments do it As per this argument, government is responsible for regulating the behaviour of the organizations for ensuring that they act in an ethical manner (Shaw Barry, 2015). Corporations lack ethics expertise. The corporations lack the moral and social expertise to make a decision which is not considered as an economic decision. They are not suited and hence cannot be trusted with the responsibility of promoting social welfare (Shaw Barry, 2015). Materialisation of society If the companies are allowed to have the power and influence for CSR, then it would be used to make the society more materialistic, as well as, commercial, by aiding the profit motive (Shaw Barry, 2015). Arguments against Arguments against Arguments against Arguments against The present corporations have negligible or no similarity to the ones that were present in Adam Smiths time. So, there is a need to adopt the evolved views (Shaw Barry, 2015). This would lead to intrusive governments. Also, it is doubtful that government would be successful in regulating the probable unethical behaviour of companies. Moreover, governments cannot predict the likely actions or behaviour to act in a proactive manner (Shaw Barry, 2015). The examples of private organizations, doing good for the society have depicted that they can work for public welfare (Shaw Barry, 2015). This argument clearly ignores the fact that the companies have huge social power already and the commercialization and materialization is already being done (Shaw Barry, 2015). Why the Broad View Arguments are More Compelling In this age of internet, the organizations are consciences on what they do and hence they follow CSR practices, to both fulfill their obligations and to create a good image. This is the reason they do more than just profit maximization. There are a number of organizations in the present time which can be taken as an example of doing more than just economic objectives. They are taking initiatives in fulfilling their duty towards the society and the environment, as these are its key stakeholders. So, the broad view is more compelling as against the narrow view (Crane, 2008). Justifying My Position Outline of Kant's Ethics A commendable example of a through nonconsequentialist approach was given by the German philosopher name Immanuel Kant. He sought out the moral principles which did not rest over the contingencies and which defined the actions as wrong or right inherently, save for the specific situations. He believed that the moral reasoning could not be based on the factual knowledge and the results of the things done, cannot determine if such actions are correct or incorrect (Shaw Barry, 2015). Universal Law In Kants ethics, the categorical imperative is the unconditional moral obligation and is binding in each and every situation. Moreover, this does not depend upon the purpose or the inclination of an individual. Kan believed that the moral rules are not imposed from outside and are legislated through the own acts of the individuals. He believed that a person would be treated in the same manner as he treats other and this was a universal law (Nyholm, 2015). So, the acts of the organizations define how they want to be treated. Good will According to Kant, the only thing which can be termed as good, without any kind of qualification is the good will. Kant argued that all other things, like courage, wealth or health, have problems and can be used for ill purposes, and hence, cannot be good intrinsically. And despite all encroachments, good will is the only unconditional good. He even believed that to be happy, one needs to possess a good will (Shaw Barry, 2015). It is the duty of the companies to fulfill its CSR obligations. And by doing so, good will is attained. So, by working for the society, the broad view of CSR is supported under Kants theory. Means to an End Kant believed that the rational individuals should be treated as an end in themselves, instead of being treated as a means for something else. This was because the humans have value in themselves. Hence, if an individual is taken to be an end-in-themselves it means that the inherent value of such individuals is not dependent upon anything else. It is irrespective if the individual enjoys their life or makes the life of others better (Louden, 2011). This is the reason why the stakeholders are treated as the focus for any of the activities of the companies. By keeping the interests of the stakeholders in mind, the companies can achieve their objectives, which are based on both economic and social factors. Analysis The theory of Kant supports the broad view of CSR. Any organization which follows the views of Kant on the ethics for operating or for basing their procedures or polices, would remain sound on ethical basis, and would also operate on a level which is ethically accepted by the society and the community. This is because Kants theory believes in doing good, as one wants to do for themselves. Moreover, Kant believed in treating humans as the end-in-themselves. Under CSR too, the companies treat the society as the end. And so, it works in a manner through which the society is bettered. The CSR policies are based on doing what is best, instead of doing what could be treated as correct. This ultimately results in the correct action. By treating the society in a proper manner and working in their favor, the company can be assumed to be working for themselves as per Kants theory. Conclusion From the above analysis of the CSRs narrow and broad view, it can be concluded that the broad view of the CSR is much more compelling. This is because the organizations nowadays are focused upon working for the society and for the environment. They have realized the importance of the society and environment as their stakeholders. And by focusing on these as the stakeholders, the organizations have been successful in attaining higher profits. So, the CSR policies following the broad view ultimately benefit the companies. The Kant theory emphasizes in treating the others in a manner in which a person wants to be treated themselves. And so, if an organization wants to benefit itself, it has to benefit the others too. Hence, by working for the society, the organizations can work for themselves. And this is why, it can be concluded that the broad view of CSR is in line with the ethical theory of Kant. There will be various statistics, opinions, history, and background information discussed through out the residuum of this thesis. The history of the death penalty, dates back to the days of Hammurabi and his code to the days of the present. The methods nowadays are certainly different, but the objective and goal has remained the same. The earliest known date of any form of organized capital punishment was in 1750 B.C., with Hammurabi and his code. The Bible prescribed death for more than 30 different crimes, including: murder, treason, theft, arson, and rape, to name a few. In the Medieval Times, treason ( grand and petty ) murder, larceny, rape, and arson were all crimes recognized as punishable by death. During the reigns of King Canute and William the Conqueror, it was not used at all. By 1800, though, more than 200 crimes were construed as punishable by death, but most were commuted by a royal pardon. In the American Colonies, in the years before the Revolution, it was commonly for a wide variety of offenses. Near the end of the 18th century, though, efforts to abolish it arose in Europe. It was led mainly by the Quakers, who believed in non-violence all together. Then when influential documents arose, it prompted and inspired the great French philosopher, Voltaire, to oppose it publicly. At the present there are many fundamental questions raised pertaining to the fact that with the death penalty intact and fully operational, isn't the government condoning killing. Also, isn't the government being kind of hypocritical when they say taking a human life is bad, but then they go ahead and do exactly the opposite of what they are saying? One of the axiomatic questions erected is: "Whether the death penalty is more effective than life-time imprisonment?". Also, is it an effective deterrent to future violent crimes? Defenders point out that since taking a life is more severe than any sentence imaginable, it must be the right and just thing to do. Public opinion in the United States supports it by more than a 2 to 1 ratio. They, also, point out that there is no other adequate hindrance in life imprisonment that is effective for those who commit heinous crimes inside or outside of the prison walls. On the flip side of the coin, the opposers say that in adjacent states in which one has it and one doesn't, there is no long term significant differences in murder rates and amplitude. Also, and this seems hard to believe, but states that use the death penalty actually show higher murder numbers than states that do not. When a local execution occurs, the murder rates do not fluctuate at all, they stay the same. There are literally thousands of ways to kill someone or something. But only about 10 of those are used in conjunction with the death penalty, itself. Many of those thousand are considered barbaric and uncivilized by today's standards . There are usually specific procedures for each execution method, to ensure a quick and painless death. There are nine methods of execution that I will now discuss. The first is crucifixion. Crucifixion was most likely first used in the 6th century B.C. and was last used in approximately the 4th century A.D. Most notably, it was used on Jesus Christ in the year 33 A.D. It is where the person is nailed to a cross for as many hours as it takes them to die from loss of blood. The second is boiling in oil. Boiling in oil usually occurs after a severe beating has been administered. It burns the cuts and open wounds, it is truly a very painful way of death. Death by boiling in oil is considered savage by today's society. The third is death by beheading. It was used commonly during the Medieval days. Usually some form of torture is performed beforehand. Not everyone has the same idea in mind about punishment, and nor did other countries from other times. The following books: The Iliad, The Odyssey, and The Hebrew Bible, entitling instances of cheating, kidnapping and murder, insulting and their punishment. Very rarely would you get away with something unseen because the Gods saw everything, and they could do just about anything known on earth to mankind or even to each other. Anything was punishable whatever time ear it was, and the Gods would cease the chance to take seeked revenge upon another. In many of the Greek based books, there was a lot of cheating going on. In the Hebrew Bible, there are severe punishments for cheating. In book I of The Iliad, Agamemnon had stated: ââ¬Å"the daughter of Chryses. I have set my heart on keeping her in my own house, for I love her better even than my own wife Clytemnestra, whose peer she is alike in form and feature, in understanding and accomplishments. â⬠In this statement, Agamemnon rathers Breisis, over his very wife because she is similar in looks, therefore would cheat instead of going back to his wife over some foolish love for a girl! Throughout the Iliad and the Odyssey, there are many points where women are given as prizes. So if the women are given as a prize, is it counted as cheating? In the Iliad, punishment to Agamemnonââ¬â¢s adulterous wife, Agamemnon kills her. In the Odyssey, Clytemnestra tries to take her love, Aegisthus for revenge. Soon enough, he is also put to the death, and she as well. In the Hebrew bible, one quote that represents well is Deuteronomy 22:22 ââ¬Å"If a man is found sleeping with another man's wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel. So the average punishment for adultery, or cheating, was the death penalty. Kidnapping was also a big theme in the Iliad, in which Breisis, daughter of the priest Apollo, was kidnapped by Agamemnon, whom professes his love for her and does not want to give her up for life itself. When studying f ormulas, it may help to study with a companion familiar with the formula in case you need help. Another method of a good study style is doing advance reading and research on your notes. By following the course syllabus, you have a basic understanding of the lesson beforehand and can do advance research on the topic in order to make sure that you are well prepared for class discussions and possible surprise questions during any exam. One of my eccentricities when reviewing for an exam is that I wear ear plugs while studying if I must study in a public place. This is because the ear plugs block out any other discussions that might interfere with my memorization and analytical readings. Although some students find that having some relaxing music to study by helps them relax and memorize their notes better. I wonââ¬â¢t disagree with this method of study because as a student, you never really know what may work. I once had a classmate who sang whole songs to herself during exams because she had placed codes to answers within her favorite songs to help her remember people, places, dates, formulas, and the like. Strange as it sounds, she actually scored A+ and Bââ¬â¢s in her tests, so I guess there are some strange study methods out there that actually do work. Highlighting words in your textbooks also works although I do not believe that it is something that students should be used to because what we highlight i n the books, may not be included in the exam and the ones we donââ¬â¢t consider important facts or figures are included in the exam. Professors are tricky in that way and students have to be aware of it. So memorize, analyze, and understand all the data instead in the event that the professor gives you an essay type testà that requires you to explain a formula or event in history. It also does not hurt to be prepared for trick questions.à Never think that you already know what the contents of a test may be. One can never be fully prepared for the exam method, but one can always be well armed with the knowledge to handle any kind of exam. Kino's Lust for Money in The Pearl by John Stienbeck In the novel The Pearl, written by John Steinbeck, Kino is a poor, hardworking man who dives for pearls as a living. Kino?s lover, Juana, fathered his baby boy, Coyotito. One day while fishing, Kino finds a giant pearl referred to in the story as ?The Pearl of the World?. He thinks it will bring him great wealth and status. Kino planned to marry Juana in a church and send Coyotito to school with the enormous profit he would gain from the pearl. While trying to sell the pearl, Kino?s greed and lust for money turned out to cause the destruction of his family. One of the ways we can see Kino?s lust for money was after he found the pearl and took it to get an appraisal. When the dealer offered a fraction of the pearl?s real value, Kino became angry thinking that they were trying to swindle him. Instead of taking the money offered by the dealer, which was a considerable amount to a man of Kino?s status, Kino rejected the offer. Each step to find a buyer brought more trouble and danger. When Kino was leaving to go to the capital to get his pearl appraised, he was attacked by thieves and was forced to kill them out of self-defense. He lost the pearl in the struggle, but his wife, Juana, found it again. Even though it was evident that the pearl was causing evil, instead of throwing the pearl back from where it came, his greed drove him to continue his journey to the capital to sell it. Now that Kino had killed a man, he believed he was being followed by a group of trackers sent to bring him back to La Paz. Kino?s greed scared him to believe that the trackers wanted the pearl for their own and he would be forced to murder them. As Kino, Juana, and Coyotito began their journey up the mountain, the trackers were getting closer and closer. Finally, Kino decided he must do something to get rid of the trackers. After leaving Juana and Coyotito in a cave, he crept to the trackers? campsite and waited. While waiting, he observed that only one of the trackers had a gun. Describe some of the ways that the Person-Centred Approach differs to Cognitive Behavioural and Psychodynamic Approaches to Counselling. The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction, not a destination. (Rogers, 1961, p. 186) The Mental Health Foundation (2012, Talking Therapies) refers to certain therapeutic approaches as talking therapies. These therapies include: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Therapy and Person Centred Therapy (PCT).The Foundation says, ââ¬ËTalking therapies give people the chance to explore their thoughts and feelings and the effect they have on their behaviour and moodââ¬â¢. In attempting to describe some of the ways that the Person-Centred approach differs to Cognitive Behavioural and Psychodynamic approaches to counselling it may be helpful to acknowledge that that binds them. The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) identifies that, ââ¬Ëthere is evidence that the relationship between the counsellor and the client is more important than the approach the therapist uses.BACP (2011). This does not presuppose that counsellors working within differing paradigms practice in an entirely different way to their counterparts or that those working within each approach operate in exactly the same way either. Indeed, it is within the relationship between the counsellor and the client that many of the differences in the therapeutic approaches can be identified. Nelson ââ¬â Jones (2011, p1) warns us to, ââ¬Ëbe careful not to exaggerate the differences between counselling and therapy schools since there are similarities and differences among them. Worsley et al. (2011, p. 25) believe that, ââ¬Ëthe Person Centred Approach is a basic philosophy of living, and not a technique for therapyââ¬â¢. Worsleyââ¬â¢s view does highlight a potential schism between the Person Centred model and the Psychodynamic and CBT approaches; that of, ââ¬Ëfeeling over processââ¬â¢ (B owyer 2011). Mearns and Thorne (2008, p. 9) provide some welcome professional credibility to this viewpoint by identifying a link between the experience of living out the tenets of the Person Centred approach (on both a philosophical and professional level), with the counsellorââ¬â¢s own ability to ââ¬Ëgrasp a hope that seems to lie beyond despairââ¬â¢.This raw awareness helps translate towards a natural realisation of some of the therapeutic conditions (namely: empathy, congruence and unconditional positive) regarded by Person Centered practitioners as critical to achieving positive change. Branch and Dryden (2008, p. 33) see this as the most significant point of divergence between the Rogerian (Person Centred) and CBT therapeutic approaches, in that Rogers considered the Core Conditions (Rogers 1957, pps. 95 ââ¬â 103) to be both necessary and sufficient whilst CBT purists recognise the conditions as desirable and necessary but not sufficient to bring about client chan ge.In purist terms therefore, it can be seen that CBT, ââ¬Ëfocuses on eliciting and restructuring maladaptive goal-impeding thinking (Branch and Dryden 2008, p. 24) whilst the Psychodynamic approaches are sometimes called the ââ¬Ëuncoveringââ¬â¢ therapies (Dryden and Mytton 1999, p. 42) which, ââ¬Ëaim to take the lid off that seething cauldron and bring the contents of the unconscious into conscious awareness. CBT and psychodynamic therapies may therefore be regarded as being focused on identifying and challenging behaviours and beliefs, whereas from the counsellorââ¬â¢s perspective, the Person Centred model assumes no such prescriptive agenda.Dryden and Mytton (1999, p. 203) acknowledge that the Psychodynamic approach focuses on the clientââ¬â¢s past experience ââ¬Ëwhereas the Person Centred approach focuses on the here and now. Care must be taken not to assume that this is a one size fits all definition. For some counsellors and therapists working within each therapeutic paradigm may well ââ¬Ëborrowââ¬â¢ methods and strategies from other approaches in order to help effect positive change. There is one tenet however which differentiates Person Centred therapy from the two other approaches; control.Whilst there is a communality of approach insofar that relationship is critical to all approaches, it is the hierarchy within the relationship which acts as differentiator. Within the Person Centred relationship, the client retains control; determining where and at what pace the relationship develops and what is explored and what remains unsaid. The non- directive approach taken by the counsellor allows the client freedom to hold his ââ¬Ëcomfort blanket of self-structureââ¬â¢ intact (Bowyer 2010) until such time that he feels able to begin a journey towards eventual self- actualisation (Goldstein 1940, p. 258). Tolan (2010, p. ) sees self- structure as being everything a person holds about herself and about the world. Following on fr om the concept of non-directive client control, the Person Centred practitioner does not consider himself to be the expert, the client is. The division between the three approaches is further widened by the atmosphere in which the counselling session takes place. Russell and Jarvis (2003, p47) identify a difference between humanistic (e. g. Person Centred) and other therapies (including CBT and Psychodynamic), in that the former refers to ââ¬Ëclientsââ¬â¢ whereas the latter regard those in therapy as ââ¬Ëpatientsââ¬â¢.This reinforces the view of humanistic based therapies (including Person Centred) that regard the therapist and client as equal partners. On the clientââ¬â¢s journey towards personal fulfillment therefore, Dryden and Mytton (1999, p. 89) feel that the counsellor or psychologist ââ¬Ëacts as a companion, not a guideââ¬â¢. In the absence of a professional ââ¬Ëexpertââ¬â¢ comes a dynamic shift of personal responsibility. Within the psychodynamic and CBT approaches, the therapist, albeit somewhat tacitly does seek to effect positive change and sees this as a professional responsibility and not one which the client is capable of undertaking on their own.To this end, it is the practitioner who assesses the need and determines the outcome(s). CBT is based on finding solutions to issues or problems identified by the counsellor. In turn, the Psychodynamic approach assumes long held conflict between the conscious and unconscious state and sees its role as ââ¬Ëbringing the unconscious thoughts and feelings into conscious awareness to help individuals make sense of their current problems, of past memories, and of dreams (Dryden and Mytton 1999, p. 4). These somewhat presumptive approaches when coupled with aââ¬â¢ fix itââ¬â¢ mentality (particularly prevalent within the time to cost driven NHS/CBT approach) seem somewhat at odds to that of Person Centred Therapy which works in the immediate and holds true the belief that â⠬Ëall clients have within themselves vast resources for developmentââ¬â¢ (Mearns and Thorne, 1988, p. 16). Mearns and Cooper (2005, p. 60) provide a meaningful insight into a comparison of therapeutic approaches, ââ¬ËWhile inexperienced therapists tend to differ widely and are easily identifiable by their adopted approach, experienced therapists tend to become more close in their working and are not so easily identified by approachâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦.. it probably means that therapists are learning from their clients and are gradually being shaped by their clients to offer a relationship that is meaningful.
